Paper Boats

They’re folded together so carefully these words,
which sink without a sound in a lake,
that is not really a lake,
but a blown up pool in someone’s front yard,
the neighbors sigh and close the curtains
wishing we’d keep our poverty and kids
in the backyard.

Melanie Du Bose writes and teaches filmmaking to teenagers in East Los Angeles.
