Mathematics which few of us understand
proves that while we are standing still
the space between us is expanding,
pushing us further and further
from everything in the universe,
friend from friend,
mother from child,
lover from lover.

Having grown up in rural Michigan David Jibson now lives in Ann Arbor where he is a co-editor of Third Wednesday, a literary arts journal and a member of The Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle.

Ursa Major And Ursa Minor

There was a first time that someone noticed,
looking into the northern sky,
not one, but two bears
and thought how ferocious
the stars must be.

Belfast, Maine

Scrabbling over the dark rocks,
dodging blasts of cold spray,
I picked up the molt of a horseshoe crab,
a creature little changed
in half a billion years
and wondered at what wisdom
there is in the sea.
